Class Descriptions
Vinyasa:
With an emphasis on the movement BETWEEN poses as much as the poses
themselves, Vinyasa classes flow from pose to pose. These classes may include up and down
movements from standing to prone and various balances and therefore may be strenuous.
Students will feel their bodies working and may increate body temperature and heart rate, though
they are not designed to be powerful workouts.
Slow Flow Vinyasa: is slower, more gentle, less strenuous, and includes less physically
challenging poses. Accessible to all levels.
Powerful Flow Vinyasa: is a faster-paced flow that includes more challenging poses that require and increase overall body strength. Requires some yoga knowledge and experience.
Hatha:
The Hatha classes at Zokawa focus on alignment and are inspired by Iyengar traditions.
They are not, however, true Iyengar classes. We generally have a peak pose that we are working
toward, so the movements and activities leading up to that peak pose are designed to prepare the
body for the specific requirements of that pose. For example, for Warrior 2 pose, we would work
on external rotation of the hips, hamstring flexibility, quad strength). In all Hatha classes, there is
an emphasis on observing what happens after the pose has been created.
Level 1 Hatha is for beginners or yogis interested in learning more about alignment,
endurance, and effort/ease balance. Accessible to all levels. *AHA
Level 2 Hatha is for yogis interested in learning and practicing inversions and doing
more strenuous poses. Requires some yoga knowledge and experience.
Yin:
Yin is a slow, passive style of yoga in which we primarily practice floor poses and use
props to support the bones so that the muscles and deeper tissues can relax. We hold the poses for
3-5 minutes, providing both body and mind time to release and relax.
Accessible to all levels. *AHA
Butterfly Flow:
A Zokawa signature class, the Butterfly Flow classes are inspired by Tai-chi movements. These classes are designed to develop more breath awareness and to create a sense
of breath-leading-body through the sequence. Butterfly flow classes also include some strength
training with light weights or resistance bands.
Accessible to all levels. *AHA
Functional Movement:
Fun and interactive, this class offers a wide variety of movements and
activities designed to increase both strength and flexibility in everyday activities.
Chair Yoga:
Traditional postures and stretches are modified to be performed while seated in a
chair or using the chair as a support prop for standing movements, making the practice accessible
for people with limited mobility, injuries, or balance concerns.
Beginners’ Yoga:
This class is specifically designed for beginners new to yoga, or yogis wanting
to return to the basics and the foundations of yoga. Poses are explained in more detail and
students learn proper alignment as well as how to utilize the breath to lead the movements and
support the body in the practice. Expect to learn and practice foundational seated, standing,
supine and prone poses as well as basic balancing poses.
